The Art of Song

Hello, My name is Jennifer Sage. I live in a remote village 73 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The Native Village of Noatak is on the Noatak River. Our water is famous in the region as the purest and safest drinking water. I enjoy hunting and fishing out in the country. I mainly do the cutting of the animals whenever the men bring in the game. I also do a lot of berry picking during the summer months for blueberries, cloudberries, and blackberries. Currently, I live with my parents. I moved back from Fairbanks after learning that I was expecting, during my first semester in college. Ever since then, I have been working full-time and schooling part-time, taking courses through UAF. My son just turned three years old; he is at that age where he is talking away about very random thoughts. My goal is to finish my degree in Accounting and then relocate somewhere in Alaska, preferably Anchorage or Fairbanks.

I enjoy singing. I love to sing at church or any event that the community invites me to sing. I believe singing is a form of art that allows you to break free from stress from everyday living. The words of the song are also an art form. The words can impact the audience by relating through experience or emotions. The tune and melody can affect anyone that hears it. Art is supposed to move the listener or viewer in some way.   Art is an expression of human creativity that appreciates its beauty or emotional power. Singing allows me to stream emotions through the sounds of my voice.

  1. Hi, Jennifer. Noatak sounds like a really cool place to live! I also believe singing is a form of art, as well as music in general. I love music's variation across cultures and genres. I love music and have always felt like there is a song for everything. The same could be said about art such as painting and drawing.
